Jeffrey Young performs in NYC

Hi Friends,

I'll get to my shows this week in just a second, but first, thingNY, the dynamic group of composers and performers I play in, is selling tickets now for our big fat show on December 19! Please visit our website, www.thingNY.com, where you'll find a link to buy tickets and read about the rest of the great shows we have planned this season. December 19 will be awesome, featuring large ensemble works with a whole bunch of singers and dancers, as well as improvisation using paint. Oberlin people on my list should come catch former Obie Jonah Bloch-Johnson's sextet, accompanied on this concert by dancers.

Now for this week:

*Thursday, December 4 with Duane Pitre's Ensemble Drones: 8:30 PM @ Roulette, 20 Greene St, Manhattan

Brooklyn-based composer, performer, and improviser Duane Pitre's work explores chaos and discipline—and the relationship that exists between the two. Tonight Pitre presents Ensemble Drones - a rule-based, long-tone composition for 20+ performers (strings, winds, and brass along with bowed electric guitar played by the composer and harmonium) arranged in a formation that will partially encompass the audience. Ensemble Drones is an exercise in discipline and freedom, in the refinement of music, and in communal focus. Check out Duane's music at www.myspace.com/duanepitre.

*Sunday, December 7 with Manson Family Picnic: 8 PM @ Sidewalk Cafe, 94 Ave A, Manhattan

Back for our second show at the Sidewalk Cafe. Our first went very well! Apparently, we're opening this time for an entire night of ukelele players. Come for our craziness, stay for Hawaii's. Meanwhile, find MFP online, if somehow you haven't yet, at www.myspace.com/mansonfamilypicnic.

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!
Jeff

AMY X NEUBURG '85 PERFORMS AT ROULETTE

It's been 3 years since I have played in NYC and I do hope you can stop by! It would be great to see you.

"Old songs, new songs, and new approaches to old technologies"

Saturday December 13, 8:30 PM
ROULETTE

Reservations/tickets: (212) 219-8242
Admission $15 / Students & seniors $10
Venue info at http://www.roulette.org
Amy is at http://www.amyxneuburg.com

Advance reservations recommended.

The show will consist of my solo 'avant-cabaret' songs for voice, live looping, electronic drums and processing. I'll also be introducing my latest work-in-development "The Dude Trilogy" for voice and Blippoo Box -- a very cute analog synth created for me by Dutch instrument designer Rob Hordijk and operated using hand motions and a Theremin-like antenna.

Also your own local anti-folk hero and discarded-technology geek Steve Espinola (Oberlin '89) will join me for an experiment in live looping using archaic recording gadgets.

Roulette is one of my favorite places to play -- great acoustics and always a nice crowd. Please come by and say hello.

Love and xx -- a

"Neuburg is a new kind of multi-threat composer... a wonder of sampling, overdubbing, and electronic manipulation of live sound, a fabulous singer... exhilarating originality. Nobody else sounds like Amy X. Some of the most compelling music being made today." -- Tom Strini, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

STRIKING VIKING STORY PIRATES OBERLIN FAMILY DAY

Announcing a very special Story Pirates show for Oberlin Alumnae and their families!

Kids loan us their written works - everything from comics to novellas to a few barely legible sentences - and we turn those stories into a raucous sketch comedy show with music, puppets, and professional actors. Now it's time for Oberlin to experience the magic of the Story Pirates! Get your tickets today for a special event just for families and friends of Oberlin Alumnae!

November 8, 2pm

at
The Drama Book Club

250 W. 40th Street
(bet. 7th and 8th Aves.)

Purchase your tickets today online at www.oberlin.edu/alumni/storypirates

For more info on Striking Viking Story Pirates,
visit http://www.storypirates.com

BUT WAIT!
Is there a kid in YOUR life whose story you'd like to see performed at this show?
Send it in!

Stories can be any length and about any topic. They can be handwritten or typed...even illustrated!
Young children can dictate their stories to a parent. Some of our best stories have been under 25 words in length. Others are many pages long.
Most IMPORTANTLY, we strive to celebrate the imaginations of the kids themselves.
We want STORIES IN KIDS OWN WORDS; STORIES NEED NOT (AND SHOULD NOT) BE CORRECTED, EDITED, OR REWRITTEN BY GROWNUPS.
They should be submitted in the kids own syntax, exactly as written or dictated. Read all the submission details at http://oberlin.edu/alumni/nyc/.

The Oberlin Entrepreneurship Scholars Program is coming to NYC this January
...and we are looking for volunteers!

The Entrepreneurship Scholars is an intensive winter term program designed to provide creative and motivated Oberlin students with the opportunity to explore entrepreneurship and begin building a foundation of the practical skills essential to planning and launching a venture. From January 5-9th the program will feature lectures on a variety of topics relating to entrepreneurship, skills-building workshops, and an individual shadow day with a professional relevant to each student.

We are looking for alumni, parents, and friends to contribute in a variety of ways, including:

•    Advising: providing feedback and guidance for student ventures;

•    Shadow hosting: having a student spend the day with you at your workplace;

•    Providing Housing: offering a student lodging in your house or apartment during winter term;

•    Spreading the word: we are always looking for recommendations for speakers and workshop leaders.

Please contact Lauren Abendschein '07 at creativity@oberlin.edu to discuss these opportunities. More information on the Entrepreneurship Scholars and other programs offered by the Creativity & Leadership Project is available at oberlin.edu/creativity

The Foolish Theatre Company presents
FUNNY AS A CRUTCH
nine irreverent comedies about disability
by Rich Orloff '73

Special discount for Oberlin alums: Use ticket code OBIE for performances through November 14, and tickets are only $12!

FUNNY AS A CRUTCH consists of nine short comedies exploring the concept of disability, how it is perceived and what we project onto it. The play is performed by an ensemble of five versatile comedic actors with disabilities. Although I didn't realize it when I started writing the play, such a project (both the script and the cast) is unprecedented. No playwright has ever written a collection of comedies on the subject. As significantly, New York has never seen a comedy whose cast is comprised 100% of actors with disabilities.

It's being presented through November 23 only, by the Foolish Theatre Company, whose motto is "Laughter guaranteed!"

Manson Family Picnic is playing at Resonance, the Jezebel Music showcase event, for our second time. The first time was great and got us a nice little review. Come out and support! In related news, congrats to Manson Family Picnic songwriter Aaron Feinstein for being chosen to play in Jezebel Music's Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition. He'll be performing in the WLSC at the Lucky Cat, 245 Grand St in Williamsburg, on Sunday, November 16 (time tba) - go cheer him on! And as always, check out more about Manson Family Picnic online at www.myspace.com/mansonfamilypicnic.

Happy voting!
Jeff

P.S. In addition to Aaron, there's a whole bunch of other great songwriters performing in the WLSC this year, several of whom I've played with (Angela Ortiz, Carl Creighton, Eric Margan, Indra Raj, Jason von Kraut, Josh Fox, Julia Ilowiecki, and Michael Wagner). Check out more about the competition, including the full schedule of performers, at www.wlsc2008.com.

MOON IN THE BUCKET
a new opera by Garrett Fisher

A wandering priest employs the moon’s reflection to release a pair of ghosts from their haunted past.  Inspired by Zeami’s fourteenth-century Noh play Matsukaze (“wind in the pines”), Moon in the Bucket is an oratorio-style “mood poem” that combines a mix of Japanese modes with Western-style harmonies to create an exquisite sound unique to Fisher’s compositions.

GENERAL ALUMNI ANNOUNCEMENTS

To the Oberlin Community:

I write to inform you that Sylvan Suskin, professor of music history at Oberlin College from 1968-2001, passed away last Thursday, October 16th, in New York City, after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer.  On behalf of his family, would you please inform the Oberlin College community in New York about my father's passing.

In keeping with his wishes, my family is attempting to organize a memorial concert celebrating my dad's life and his passion for music--a passion he tried so enthusiastically, and at times acrobatically, to impart on his students.  Our goal is to have the concert in early-to-mid December 2008.  We would so love it if a group of his former students, friends and colleagues could perform some of the pieces that he so cherished.

We would be most grateful if you could email the news of my father's passing to the Oberlin community in NYC (at last count he had over 11,000 students), asking if any of his former students would be interested in attending, and most especially performing, at the event.  My father would have been so thrilled to know that his dear students performed at his memorial.  We are also looking into various venues in Manhattan to hold the event, but could certainly use any advice the Oberlin community might give us.

Please let any interested students contact me directly at marcsuskin@mac.com or 917.547.3155.

Sincerely,
Marc Suskin and the Suskin family

Condolences should be sent to:

Malou Suskin
142 West End Avenue

Thanks.

“an electrifyingly complex and explosively gripping portrait of contemporary, have-it-all motherhood.”— Booklist

“The book was amazing. ... As the story continues we truly get to know both Moms. OMG – I loved them both. I hated them both. I wanted to hug them both. I wanted to shake them both. I wanted to crawl into the pages and bang THEIR heads together. There was so much of ME in both of them.”
My Life As It Is book review of The Other Mother

Featured in the USA Today, the New York Daily News, the Toronto Star, Redbook, OK! Magazine, and on National Public Radio, the selection of four national book clubs including the Book of the Month club, with a 5-star review from Amazon.com. Read more mom blog book reviews here

From Jeffrey Lependorf '84

It's Dressmaking, But Not NICE Dressmaking

At last, "Tim Gunn's Podcast (a reality chamber opera)," Jeffrey Lependorf's (Obie '84) fashion forward operatic love letter to "Project Runway's" Tim Gunn, is coming to the New York International Fringe Festival!

Starring the hysterically funny and velvet-voiced John Schenkel (Obie '83), with artful direction from Linda Lehr, you'll want to buy tickets RIGHT AWAY as it will surely sell out.  Why, it's already been featured in advance notice pieces on Theatre.com, Playbill.com, Broadway.com, and New York Daily News and tickets are on sale NOW.  So don't delay!

Order tickets (only $15) here: http://www.fringenyc.org/

Just look up "Tim Gunn's Podcast" there and purchase away.

Here's the schedule:
Tim Gunn's Podcast (a reality chamber opera)
At the 2008 New York International Fringe Festival
Performances at THE JAZZ GALLERY
290 Hudson Street  (#1 to Houston, or C / E to Spring St.)
Wednesday  8/13  at 8:15 pm
  Thursday  8/14  at 6:00 pm
  Sunday 8/17  at 4:30 pm
  Friday 8/22 at 5:15 pm
  Saturday 8/23 at 10:00 pm

From the press release (in case you still need convincing):
Reality television meets chamber opera: In Tim Gunn's Podcast (a reality chamber opera) a singing "Tim Gunn" reveals the behind-the-scenes, nail-biting story of how Kayne, Jeffrey, Vincent and Angela battle it out designing a gown for Miss USA — with piano accompaniment!  Based on Tim Gunn's actual Project Runway podcast of the infamous "Miss USA Pageant" episode of season three, the production is hysterically funny and truly gripping.

The show features baritone John Schenkel singing the role of Tim Gunn, with composer Jeffrey Lependorf at the piano, directed by Linda Lehr. Schenkel's velvety baritone has been enjoyed in opera houses from Berlin to Brooklyn, and Lependorf's music has been performed around the globe (literally! — a recording of one of his works traveled for a year aboard the Mir space station); Alex Ross of The New York Times has described his work as "mesmerizing." Linda Lehr is the Principal Director of Regina Opera and well known to audiences of opera-theater.

Tim Gunn's Podcast (a reality chamber opera) was created for the 30th anniversary of the Cornelia Street Café, where it premiered with a single performance last August, and has only been performed once since, at a private Fashion Week party at a tony penthouse apartment in NYC.

June 21
Oberlin Alumni Summer Picnic in Central Park
Join us for the Oberlin Club of New York City Summer Picnic
Central Park - The Great Hill Oval
Saturday, June 21, 2008 from Noon - 3:00 p.m.

Join your fellow Obies for our annual "BYO" (Bring Your Own) Summer Picnic as we return to Central Park! This is a great chance to see old friends, meet current students and introduce yourself to incoming first year students and their parents! It will be a great time.
ALL are welcome - bring your spouse/partner, friends and children!
The 2008 Annual NYC Summer Picnic is coordinated by Mathila McGee-Tubb '07.
Look for people in Oberlin gear!

Please RSVP to the Alumni Office no later than Thursday, June 19th at http://www.alumni.oberlin.edu/eventregistration or calling 800-693-3167. Be sure to include your email address so that you can be contacted in case of cancellation due to inclement weather.

Bring: Frisbees, non-amplified musical instruments and your own picnic!

DIRECTIONS:
Closest subways: 1 train to 103rd and Broadway, B or C train to 103rd and Central Park West . Closest buses: M4 or M7 to 110th and Frederick Douglass/Central Park West, M10 to 104th and Central Park West, M96 to 96th and Central Park West.

The Great Hill is a hilltop meadow surrounded by American Elm and English Elms. With picnic tables on its northern rim it is circled by a three quarter mile oval enjoyed by runners who reside in the area. The Great Hill was originally designed as a high elevation, the third highest in the Park, where visitors could enjoy an unobstructed view of the Hudson River and the Palisades. It was also a carriage concourse where the affluent could mingle with others of their class. Time of course changed all of this, even the view. With tall buildings and increased foliage baring the once magnificent site of the river in the distance the Great Hill needs no excuse for its being. T hough unfamiliar to most Park visitors due to its location in an obscure part of the northwestern quadrant of the Park the residents of the area and occasional visitors from beyond its community perimeter find it a wonderful place to enjoy a picnic, have a quiet jog or even sunbathe or read on the untrammeled grass of the hilltop meadow.
Find a park map at: http://www.centralpark.com

June 25 - Happy Hour in Flatiron District
Dusk Lounge ( 147 W. 24th St. bet 6th & 7th ) is expecting us on

They'll have $5 Cosmos, $4 well drinks and $4 bottles of Budweiser until 9.
Come join your fellow alums for a mid-week summer chance to blow off steam!

May 4 - Sept 21

Oberlin Alums perform at the Rubin Museum
Dear Fellow Obies,
I am overjoyed to inform you of some upcoming events at the Rubin Museum of Art in which members of the Oberlin community will be highlighted. I feel strongly that this is another wonderful opportunity to reach out to the larger Oberlin community in New York City and neighboring regions, and inform them of these exciting offerings with the hope that RMA can be a community space for us Obies to share our love of music, art and drink specials!

Throughout the summer members of the Oberlin Conservatory will be the spotlight of our Harlem in the Himalayas series, including the following events:
- June 20 - The Billy Hart Academy Featuring Theo Croker (This performance is part of the JVC Jazz Festival)
- July 11 - The Theo Croker Quartet featuring Wycliffe Gordon
- July 18 - The Jimmy Cobb Quartet Featuring Theo Croker
- Aug. 15 - The Theo Croker Quartet featuring Benny Powell and Winard Harper
- Aug. 29 - The Theo Croker Quartet featuring Marcus Belgrave
We are incredibly excited about this wonderful showcase and with proper outreach I am sure that the Oberlin community in New York and neighboring regions will come out for it.

In addition, another exciting collaboration is happening on June 11th as David Orr, Oberlin’s Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies will be participating in CONVERSATIONS ON CONSCIOUSNESS with Bokara Legendre at 6:30pm. Bokara Legendre has participated in numerous talks at the RMA in the past and David and her personality will surely make for a lively and interesting program.

I think the Oberlin community will be enthused about these events and I would love to speak with you in greater detail about how to get the word out.

If we wanted to reserve some tables in the museum’s café for the Oberlin community on one or more of these evenings, we could do this free of cost and might be a nice way for individuals to get together and have a space to convene. As you know, on Friday nights the café turns into the K2 lounge and we have drink specials and food offerings that are really quite good.

In addition, members of the museum receive a 10% discount on all food and shop items, and if members purchase 6 or more tickets at the same time to any combination of events they receive a 25% discount. This seams like a viable option for the Oberlin community being that there are so many event offerings upcoming.

Do let me know your thoughts on this and I look forward to discussing how we can combine forces to get out the word to our alumni and student population in New York and the vicinity.

Warm regards,

He's one of my favorite playwrights! I was Titania in his "Thyme of the Season" ("Midsummer" sequel) and I'm
SUPER-CHARGED to get to play with another of his hilarious, clever, and insightful scripts! (OC alumnus Rich Orloff is good like that, too. Get your giggle on at RichOrloff.com!) -- Tricia (OC '98)

Please email belmont83@aol.com or call (212) 879-8317. Andrea, OC '83 Current Student Needs Summer Housing My name is jamie shorey and I'm currently finishing up my sophomore year
here at Oberlin. I have an internship in NYC lined up for the summer
with Warp Records, except recently my housing has fallen through. Due
to the poor timing of the housing situation, as I'm currently in the
midst of finals, I haven't had the most time to properly search for
alternatives in New York asides from Craigslist or friends. I
can pay rent if needed. So if you happen to know of anything, or if you
happen to have any advice I'd love to hear back. Also, I'd be more than
happy to answer any questions or talk in general. Thank you. sincerely,
