From Jeffrey Lependorf '84

It's Dressmaking, But Not NICE Dressmaking

At last, "Tim Gunn's Podcast (a reality chamber opera)," Jeffrey Lependorf's (Obie '84) fashion forward operatic love letter to "Project Runway's" Tim Gunn, is coming to the New York International Fringe Festival!

Starring the hysterically funny and velvet-voiced John Schenkel (Obie '83), with artful direction from Linda Lehr, you'll want to buy tickets RIGHT AWAY as it will surely sell out.  Why, it's already been featured in advance notice pieces on Theatre.com, Playbill.com, Broadway.com, and New York Daily News and tickets are on sale NOW.  So don't delay!

Order tickets (only $15) here: http://www.fringenyc.org/

Just look up "Tim Gunn's Podcast" there and purchase away.

Here's the schedule:
Tim Gunn's Podcast (a reality chamber opera)
At the 2008 New York International Fringe Festival
Performances at THE JAZZ GALLERY
290 Hudson Street  (#1 to Houston, or C / E to Spring St.)
Wednesday  8/13  at 8:15 pm
  Thursday  8/14  at 6:00 pm
  Sunday 8/17  at 4:30 pm
  Friday 8/22 at 5:15 pm
  Saturday 8/23 at 10:00 pm

From the press release (in case you still need convincing):
Reality television meets chamber opera: In Tim Gunn's Podcast (a reality chamber opera) a singing "Tim Gunn" reveals the behind-the-scenes, nail-biting story of how Kayne, Jeffrey, Vincent and Angela battle it out designing a gown for Miss USA — with piano accompaniment!  Based on Tim Gunn's actual Project Runway podcast of the infamous "Miss USA Pageant" episode of season three, the production is hysterically funny and truly gripping.

The show features baritone John Schenkel singing the role of Tim Gunn, with composer Jeffrey Lependorf at the piano, directed by Linda Lehr. Schenkel's velvety baritone has been enjoyed in opera houses from Berlin to Brooklyn, and Lependorf's music has been performed around the globe (literally! — a recording of one of his works traveled for a year aboard the Mir space station); Alex Ross of The New York Times has described his work as "mesmerizing." Linda Lehr is the Principal Director of Regina Opera and well known to audiences of opera-theater.

Tim Gunn's Podcast (a reality chamber opera) was created for the 30th anniversary of the Cornelia Street Café, where it premiered with a single performance last August, and has only been performed once since, at a private Fashion Week party at a tony penthouse apartment in NYC.

Theo Croker performs at The Rubin Museum

The Rubin Museum of Art, dedicated to the arts of the Himalayas, is holding a series of jazz concerts this summer featuring a number of Oberlin alumni during their free Friday night K2 lounge hours.  Concerts are held in their world class theater and tickets give you access to the gallery floors, holding a stunning collection of Himalayan art.

The museum is located at 150 West 17th street between 6th and 7th.
All concerts start at 7:00pm, tickets are $18 in advance and $20 at the door.

Aug. 15 - The Theo Croker ‘07 Quartet featuring Benny Powell and Winard Harper

Drummer Winard Harper continues to innovate musically while remaining reverential to his predecessors. He is known for his prowess with a drum set as well as the balafon, the West African equivalent of the marimba.

For more than sixty years, Benny Powell has been the consummate sideman, playing with Lionel Hampton, the Basie Band, and the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. The versatile trombonist plays across styles and genres. He teaches at The New School for Jazz and the Performing Arts.

Aug. 29 - The Theo Croker ‘07 Quartet featuring Marcus Belgrave

Master jazz trumpeter Marcus Belgrave collaborated extensively with Ray Charles. He is known not only for his work as an artist but also as a mentor to a new generation of jazz musicians. Belgrave emphasizes technique as well as improvisation to his students at Oberlin College.

OFFER AN OBERLIN STUDENT A WINTER TERM INTERNSHIP

Sponsored by the Office of Career Services

Please consider offering a Winter Term internship to a current Oberlin student. A Winter Term internship (the month of January) presents an opportunity for you to share information about your profession, provide career mentoring, and offer exposure to an occupational field of interest.  In return you get an eager assistant to help out with substantive projects for a month!

New York City is Oberlin’s most popular destination for Winter Term interns and the students’ experiences reflect their diverse professional and personal interests.  Last year over 50 students excelled in fields such as art, music, theater, law, finance, education, social service, public policy, and publishing. We hope you will consider offering an internship of your own!

Nathan Elton, Associate Director in the Office of Career Services, will support you through the entire internship process and is available to answer any questions that you may have about drafting an internship description, developing intern roles and responsibilities, and selecting an intern.  He can be reached at: Nathan.elton@oberlin.edu or 440-775-8847. Please contact him at your earliest convenience, or, if you are ready to submit a Winter Term internship visit:http://www.oberlin.edu/career/WT/wtinternshipform.html

One final note, the Office of Career Services is always interested in sharing your summer internship and post-graduation opportunities with students.  If you have a position that you would like to post please visit: http://www.oberlin.edu/career/Employers/post_position.html

Thank you!
