ALUMNI CLUB EVENTS IN THE CITY THIS MONTH:
June 21
Oberlin Alumni Summer Picnic in Central Park
Join us for the Oberlin Club of New York City Summer Picnic
Central Park - The Great Hill Oval
Saturday, June 21, 2008 from Noon - 3:00 p.m.

Join your fellow Obies for our annual "BYO" (Bring Your Own) Summer Picnic as we return to Central Park! This is a great chance to see old friends, meet current students and introduce yourself to incoming first year students and their parents! It will be a great time.
ALL are welcome - bring your spouse/partner, friends and children!
The 2008 Annual NYC Summer Picnic is coordinated by Mathila McGee-Tubb '07.
Look for people in Oberlin gear!

Please RSVP to the Alumni Office no later than Thursday, June 19th at http://www.alumni.oberlin.edu/eventregistration or calling 800-693-3167. Be sure to include your email address so that you can be contacted in case of cancellation due to inclement weather.

Bring: Frisbees, non-amplified musical instruments and your own picnic!

DIRECTIONS:
Closest subways: 1 train to 103rd and Broadway, B or C train to 103rd and Central Park West . Closest buses: M4 or M7 to 110th and Frederick Douglass/Central Park West, M10 to 104th and Central Park West, M96 to 96th and Central Park West.

The Great Hill is a hilltop meadow surrounded by American Elm and English Elms. With picnic tables on its northern rim it is circled by a three quarter mile oval enjoyed by runners who reside in the area. The Great Hill was originally designed as a high elevation, the third highest in the Park, where visitors could enjoy an unobstructed view of the Hudson River and the Palisades. It was also a carriage concourse where the affluent could mingle with others of their class. Time of course changed all of this, even the view. With tall buildings and increased foliage baring the once magnificent site of the river in the distance the Great Hill needs no excuse for its being. T hough unfamiliar to most Park visitors due to its location in an obscure part of the northwestern quadrant of the Park the residents of the area and occasional visitors from beyond its community perimeter find it a wonderful place to enjoy a picnic, have a quiet jog or even sunbathe or read on the untrammeled grass of the hilltop meadow.
Find a park map at: http://www.centralpark.com

June 25 - Happy Hour in Flatiron District
Dusk Lounge ( 147 W. 24th St. bet 6th & 7th ) is expecting us on
Wednesday, June 25th. I've spoken with the manager, and it doesn't get
too crowded on weeknights. Just in case, though, they are going to
reserve a little area for us. I've also checked the place out in
person, and it has a low key feel.
They'll have $5 Cosmos, $4 well drinks and $4 bottles of Budweiser until 9.
Come join your fellow alums for a mid-week summer chance to blow off steam!

May 4 - Sept 21
AMAM Painting at The Jewish Museum
Oberlin's Allen Memorial Art Museum's Barnett Newman painting, "Onement IV," is included in the exhibition "Action/Abstraction: Pollock, DeKooning, and American Art, 1940-1976" at The Jewish Museum in New York City.
The exhibition is on view from May 4 - September 21, 2008.
Newman's 1949 vertical-zip painting was acquired by the Allen Memorial Art Museum (AMAM), Oberlin College in 1969.

Oberlin Professor Roger Copeland in Panel Discussion about Susan Sontag
On Sat. June 7th, I'm part of a panel discussion in Manhattan about the legacy of Susan Sontag.
(Sontag's writings are at the center of my Oberlin course "Concept of the Avant-Garde" which I've taught here for 30 years; and hundreds of N.Y. area alumni have taken that course.)
Here are the details about the event:

Oberlin Alums perform at the Rubin Museum
Dear Fellow Obies,
I am overjoyed to inform you of some upcoming events at the Rubin Museum of Art in which members of the Oberlin community will be highlighted. I feel strongly that this is another wonderful opportunity to reach out to the larger Oberlin community in New York City and neighboring regions, and inform them of these exciting offerings with the hope that RMA can be a community space for us Obies to share our love of music, art and drink specials!

Throughout the summer members of the Oberlin Conservatory will be the spotlight of our Harlem in the Himalayas series, including the following events:
- June 20 - The Billy Hart Academy Featuring Theo Croker (This performance is part of the JVC Jazz Festival)
- July 11 - The Theo Croker Quartet featuring Wycliffe Gordon
- July 18 - The Jimmy Cobb Quartet Featuring Theo Croker
- Aug. 15 - The Theo Croker Quartet featuring Benny Powell and Winard Harper
- Aug. 29 - The Theo Croker Quartet featuring Marcus Belgrave
We are incredibly excited about this wonderful showcase and with proper outreach I am sure that the Oberlin community in New York and neighboring regions will come out for it.

In addition, another exciting collaboration is happening on June 11th as David Orr, Oberlin’s Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies will be participating in CONVERSATIONS ON CONSCIOUSNESS with Bokara Legendre at 6:30pm. Bokara Legendre has participated in numerous talks at the RMA in the past and David and her personality will surely make for a lively and interesting program.

I think the Oberlin community will be enthused about these events and I would love to speak with you in greater detail about how to get the word out.

If we wanted to reserve some tables in the museum’s café for the Oberlin community on one or more of these evenings, we could do this free of cost and might be a nice way for individuals to get together and have a space to convene. As you know, on Friday nights the café turns into the K2 lounge and we have drink specials and food offerings that are really quite good.

In addition, members of the museum receive a 10% discount on all food and shop items, and if members purchase 6 or more tickets at the same time to any combination of events they receive a 25% discount. This seams like a viable option for the Oberlin community being that there are so many event offerings upcoming.

Do let me know your thoughts on this and I look forward to discussing how we can combine forces to get out the word to our alumni and student population in New York and the vicinity.

Warm regards,
Asha Kaufman

here at Oberlin. I have an internship in NYC lined up for the summer
with Warp Records, except recently my housing has fallen through. Due
to the poor timing of the housing situation, as I'm currently in the
midst of finals, I haven't had the most time to properly search for
alternatives in New York asides from Craigslist or friends. I
can pay rent if needed. So if you happen to know of anything, or if you
happen to have any advice I'd love to hear back. Also, I'd be more than
happy to answer any questions or talk in general. Thank you. sincerely,
