Saturday, August 15
Oberlin Club of NYC Summer Picnic

1 to 4 p.m. at Central Park

Because of the rain on June 20, the Oberlin Club of New York re-scheduled the annual Summer Picnic for Saturday, August 15!

Sponsored by the Oberlin Alumni Association and the Parents Executive Committee, the Summer Picnics offer a great opportunity to meet local Oberlin alumni, parents, current students and incoming freshman for a fun filled casual picnic before the start of the school year.

Central Park - Sheep's Meadow (Look for the red and gold Oberlin colored balloons)

6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at reBar, 147 Front St., Brooklyn

You're invited to join fellow NY Obies for the August Happy Hour at reBar! Enjoy $1 off all draft beers and wine, $5 double strength well drinks and a special Oberlin-themed cocktail! Staten Island Yankees vs. Tri-City Valley Cats
7 p.m. at Richmond County Bank Ballpark, Staten Island

Join fellow Oberlin alums in cheering on the Staten Island Yankees as they take on the Tri-City Valley Cats. Enjoy all-you-can-eat hot dogs, hamburgers/cheeseburgers and chicken sandwiches and all-you-can-drink soda and water. Admission includes a free Staten Island Yankees cap and a free game program. There will be fireworks after the game!

The Richmond County Bank Ballpark is located on the most northern tip of Staten Island, adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry terminal.

Cost is $16 per person. Please RSVP to the Alumni Office (see link below) no later than August 11. Tickets will be available starting at 6 p.m. in front of the will-call area (the Hamilton Avenue Entrance). Look for the Oberlin Alumni T-shirt. If you arrive after 7 p.m., your ticket(s) will be available at will call under your name.

Celebrating the Oberlin College Tradition of Mentorship: An Evening with Ishmael Beah and Dan Chaon
7:30 p.m. at New York Society for Ethical Culture Concert Hall, 2 W. 64th St. at Central Park West

Featuring Ishmael Beah ’04, best-selling author of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, and Dan Chaon, Pauline M. Delaney Professor of Creative Writing and Literature. Welcome by Sean Decatur, Dean of Arts and Sciences, followed by a candid conversation between Ishmael Beah and Dan Chaon.

Primordial Jazz Funktet (lead by Dan Furman '87) performs
Dan Furman '87 leads and composes for the Primordial Jazz Funktet, which performs at DROM Sunday, August 2. The band will play two sets beginning at 8 p.m. Cover charge: $10. DROM is located at 85 Avenue A (between 5th and 6th St.) Reservations recommended: 212-777-1157.

Afterlight by Monica Flory '98 at NYC Fringe Festival
Afterlight by Monica Flory '98 will be produced by Threads Theater Company at the NYC Fringe Festival this summer.

Twilight. A flutter, quick and light. A wolf howls. An accident. Ordinary lives collide with the supernatural. Inspired by surrealist photography, Afterlight is the story of a small community clinging to hope amidst unsettling events. Directed by Misti B. Wills.

Performances will be at the Cherry Lane Theatre, 38 Commerce St., in the Village. Performance dates and times are:

Artistic New Directions presents A Time to Dance, written and performed by Libby Skala ’89. A production of the Present Company. Performance dates and times are:

Oberlin students perform at Cornelia Street Guitar Festival
Chrysalis, a group including Rafiq Bhatia (OC '10; guitar/compositions) and Jackson Hill (OC '10; bass), has been selected to perform as part of the Cornelia Street Cafe Guitar Festival on Tuesday, August 18. More information:

The brainchild of emergent composer-performers Corey King (trombone) and Rafiq Bhatia (guitar), Chrysalis is an exposition of the common thread permeating creative traditions in jazz, hip-hop, electronica, drone music, South Asian music, experimental music, and popular songwriting.

We are honored to have been selected to perform as a part of the Cornelia Street Cafe Guitar Festival, which will showcase some of the most highly acclaimed guitarists in modern jazz: Ben Monder, Brad Shepik, Ila Cantor, and Mike Baggetta.

Sing with an Obie
Marina Alexander (Conservatory '75) conducts 3 choral ensembles in the metro NY-NJ area, and invites Obies to come and sing.
In NJ, she leads The Arcadian Chorale, a group she founded, now staring its 17th season (www.arcadianchorale.org).
In NYC, she leads two ensembles: the Richmond Choral Society on Staten Island (www.richmondchoral.com), and the Metropolitan Greek Chorale in Manhattan (www.metrogreekchorale.org).

Ezra Pincus-Roth '08 invites fellow Obies to get involved with the NYC Parks Department's new volunteer corps, known as the Green Team. He says: "I work for the NYC Parks Department, and we're creating a new volunteer corps of New Yorkers dedicated to reduce the ecological footprint of public events in parks.
