FUTURE CLUB EVENTS

October 15
The Oberlin Authors Book Club meets again!
6 p.m. in Midtown Manhattan (location TBA)

Please join us as we welcome Les Leopold (Oberlin ’69), as our guest author.  We will be reading his novel, The Looting of America

In a book that pulls no punches, Les shows clearly shows that the crash was a result of our obscene distribution of income combined with financial deregulation, and not the result of consumers buying houses they couldn’t afford. This is one book that breaks it all down into everyday language, or as Les writes, “If I can understand this crap, so can you.”

The book and Les also point us towards concrete reforms that are necessary in order to prevent the next crash and to move us to a fairer, more stable economy. For example, he advocates a series of policies to reduce the outrageous gaps between the top and bottom of the income ladder, and to put a lid on sky-high Wall Street salaries.

Les is passionate about his work and ideas, and he promises that you won’t go to sleep or even get drowsy. The Oberlin of the 1960s runs right through him and he can’t wait to share it with you.

Here’s what some reviewers say:

"I loved this book. A worms'-eye dissection of the Wall Street crisis from a very sharp and very knowledgeable labor economist. Here's hoping that before the Washington consensus gets set in stone, policymakers will read it and reflect on the havoc the masters of the universe have wreaked on ordinary people."--Charles Morris, author of The Trillion Dollar Meltdown: Easy Money, High Rollers, and the Great Credit Crash and Money, Greed, and Risk: Why Financial Crises and Crashes Happen

“Les Leopold tells the story of our economic collapse so clearly, so broadly, so stylishly I didn’t get lost; in fact, to my great surprise, I kept going and going like Hansel and Gretel through the thick forest of mortgage finance, credit swaps, bubbles and bailouts. The Looting of America is a guided tour for people who wonder if the ups and downs of a free market are inevitable, or if we can’t make a few changes for a smoother ride.”--Robert Krulwich, NPR Science Correspondent and co-host of Radio Lab

“Les Leopold’s account of the economic crisis is the clearest and most accessible that I have seen. It gives a reader with little economics or financial background a riveting description of how Wall Street tore down our economy and what we can do about it. It’s a page turner we all should read.”--Leo Gerard, International President of the United Steelworkers

If you want to understand more about what caused the economic crisis and what’s happening right now, you may want to visit with Les Leopold, the author of The Looting of America: How Wall Street’s Game of Fantasy Finance Destroyed our Jobs, Pensions and Prosperity and What we can do about it. (http://www.amazon.com/Looting-America-Destroyed-Pensions-Prosperity/dp/1603582053%3FSubscriptionId%3D1QZMGW0RRJC2PX87HDR2%26tag%3Dsalranexp-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D1603582053)

I hope to see many of you at this meeting.  What great material for lively discussion!
Please read the book before the meeting if you are able.

RSVPs welcome, but not necessary.  KJK11b@aol.com.

GENERAL ALUMNI ANNOUNCEMENTS

Offer an Oberlin Student a Winter Term Internship or Temporary Housing

Sponsored by the Office of Career Services

Please consider offering a Winter Term internship to a current Oberlin student. A Winter Term internship (the month of January) presents an opportunity for you to share information about your profession, provide mentoring, and offer exposure to an career field of interest.  In return you will have a motivated assistant to help out with substantive projects for a month!

New York is one of Oberlin's more popular destination for Winter Term interns and the students' experiences reflect their diverse professional and personal interests. Last year students excelled in fields such as art, education, social service, law, public policy, management, and conservation. We hope you will consider offering an internship of your own.

Since many students complete Winter Term internships away from home, there is also a great need for temporary housing for students during the month of January. Housing opportunities with alumni have made it possible for many students to have access to internships that would not otherwise have been financially feasible. If you are interested in providing housing for an Oberlin student during Winter Term, please indicate this in your OBIEweb profile.

Liz Lierman, Assistant Director in the Office of Career Services, will support you through the internship or housing process and is available to answer any questions that you may have about drafting an internship description, developing intern roles and responsibilities, and selecting an intern.  She can be reached at:liz.lierman@oberlin.edu or (440) 775-8140.

Fellowship for Emerging Leaders in Public Service (Apply by Sept. 16)

The Fellowship for Emerging Leaders in Public Service (FELPS) provides people in their first or second post-college job at a nonprofit organization, foundation or government agency with structured opportunities to develop leadership skills and competencies, connect with a network of other dynamic and committed leaders, and explore the many facets of a modern public service career.

Career development and speaker sessions held twice a month from November 2009 through May 2010 will focus broadly on four questions:

-Why public service? FELPS encourages fellows to deepen their commitment to public service and explore the many exciting and challenging options that a modern-day public service career offers. -What's in my leadership toolbox? FELPS assists fellows with clearly assessing their assets, knowledge base and skill sets. With this evaluation of their personal "tools," fellows have a greater ability to identify opportunities to expand key competencies at work and in their lives.
-Who's in my network? Beginning with their peer cohort, Fellows develop a wider network of relationships and a greater ability to tap those relationships to advance their work and careers.
-What's my career map? Fellows benefit from structured sessions with and guidance from Career Guides, who are established executives in various public service professions, and gain a more robust understanding of the complex terrain of public service.

FELPS is sponsored by the Research Center for Leadership in Action (RCLA) at the NYU’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. RCLA is committed to developing a deep and diverse pool of committed public service leaders at all levels.

Applications are available at wagner.nyu.edu/felps. The deadline to apply is 5:00 pm EST on Wednesday, September 16, 2009, and applications are accepted online only.

I have attached a flyer with more information here. For any questions regarding FELPS or the application process, please contact me or the program manager at wagner.felps@nyu.edu.  We are excited about the potential FELPS has to serve the broader New York City public service community by providing an important new avenue for nurturing talent and would appreciate your sharing information with your alumni network.

Sincerely,
Colleen Coffey
